Every bespoke carpentry project begins with an idea, but our favourite commissions often start with a very specific lifestyle need. When a client approaches us looking for a piece of furniture that simply doesn’t exist in high street showrooms, our team at Lahart Carpentry gets genuinely excited.
Recently, we completed a project that perfectly captures why bespoke joinery is worth every bit of care and craft: a custom, family-sized corner bench seat combining natural solid oak with seamless painted cabinetry.
Here is the story behind this build, how we approached the design, and why bespoke solutions transform the way families enjoy their living spaces.
The Brief: Maximising Light, Comfort, and Storage
Our client’s home features an airy rear extension wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass doors and overhead skylights, opening directly onto a lush green garden. The room had abundant natural light and wonderful outdoor views, but it lacked a dedicated focal point where the whole family could comfortably gather, unwind, or read a book.
The requirements were clear:
- Ample Seating: Generous enough for multiple family members to sit together or stretch out comfortably.
- Clever Concealed Storage: Essential for tucking away toys, board games, blankets, and seasonal items without cluttering the floor plan.
- Architectural Harmony: A clean, low-profile silhouette that honours the expansive glass frames without competing with the garden view.
Crafting the Details: Warm Oak Meets Crisp Painted Joinery
To strike the ideal balance between warmth and modern minimalism, we paired natural solid oak with smooth, satin-painted cupboard fronts.
1. Elegant Contours and Solid Oak Framing
The outer wrap and backrest are crafted from carefully selected solid oak, finished to showcase the timber’s natural grain and soft tones. We incorporated gentle curved profiles on the arm rests to soften the lines against the darker floorboards and modern glazed sliding doors.
2. Clean, Push-to-Open Storage Cupboards
Rather than relying on standard lift-up bench lids—which require moving cushions every time you need access—we engineered integrated cupboard doors beneath the seating platform. Finished in a fresh off-white to match the interior walls, these doors open smoothly to provide generous, easily accessible storage.
3. Tailored Cushioned Comfort
To make the nook truly inviting throughout the year, the bench is fitted with custom upholstered cushions and accent pillows, creating an irresistible spot for a morning coffee or an afternoon reading session by the garden.
Why Bespoke Furniture Transforms a Space
A standard off-the-shelf bench or sofa rarely fits an architectural alcove or corner perfectly. Off-the-shelf furniture often leaves awkward gaps, blocks light pathways, or creates unused dead space.
By taking precise measurements and designing directly to the room’s proportions:
- The bench sits flush against both walls, looking like a natural architectural feature of the property.
- Sightlines out to the garden remain completely open and unobstructed.
- Every single millimetre beneath the seats serves a functional storage purpose.
Turning Your Ideas Into Reality
Many of the most popular designs in our portfolio started as a rough sketch or an idea our clients brought to the table. Once we install a piece and share the photographs, we invariably get requests asking if we can build something similar.
If your home has an underutilised corner, an awkward alcove, or an open-plan room in need of tailored storage and seating, we are eager to see what we can do for you.
